Switchyard and Substation Design

TimelProject maintains a core group of engineers and designers with varying backgrounds in the electric utility and consulting engineering industries. This collective experience includes design, construction, operations, maintenance, system protection and control, and apparatus expertise.
At the conceptual phase of a substation project, TimelProject works closely with client engineers to determine whether existing lines or substations can be retrofitted and modernized to increase capacity for known or projected electrical loads.
If a client chooses a retrofit/capacity increase to existing facilities, we develop a one-line conceptual schematic to illustrate the proposed system improvements—including information on protection (relaying and controls) and equipment (transformers, breakers, etc.). In addition, our structural and foundation evaluations provide conceptual outlines showing parameters for retrofits or additions.
If a new facility is required for an electrical load center, we provide a site development proposal that meets national regulations, as well as conceptual plans.
For each project, we provide a detailed final engineering drawing package, complete with material and cable lists for construction use by the client's own work force or contractor. A turnkey EPC project can be performed, including construction and commissioning. TimelProject has multiple alliance agreements with vendors and subcontractros to shorten delivery times as well as completion times when required.

Recent Selected Experience

Engineering Analysis and Equipment Installation at Camp Able Sentry Electrical Distribution System

Client: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Europe District, Transatlantic Programs Center.  1999
Timel contracted with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to design and build power supply of the Camp Able Sentry.  Timel’s team conducted a detailed study to allocate potentials for power supply of the camp.  To meet the requirements and to secure safe and reliable supply of the camp, 6 km of 10 kV cable has been installed to link the camp substation and the main 35 kV substation located nearby Skopje airport.  Timel built a Ring Main Unit (RMU) substation with capacity of 2x1,600 kVA, first of such kind in Skopje. The entire project was implemented in three months time. Timel was contracted to maintain regular inspections on site and to respond to unscheduled repair calls to thus provide continuous electricity supply of the Camp. Timel worked in close coordination with the Base Camp Coordination Activity Officer and Brown and Root Services’ technicians (1999-2003).
Client: STV Incorporated.  2000
STV Incorporated has selected Timel to work with exclusively for the development of an Engineering Analysis and Equipment Installation at Camp Able Sentry Electrical Distribution System, located within Petrovec military complex, near Skopje.
The purpose of the study was to determine the adequacy of the electrical system at Camp Able Sentry, make recommendations for upgrade and proceed with installation after final approval.  A detailed in-depth engineering study of electrical distribution system was performed to determine its shortfalls and recommend immediate solutions that allowed the camp to resume operating on commercially supplied power. The study recommendations formed a workable plan that improved the safety and reliability of the electrical system at Camp Able Sentry.  After the study was finalized, Timel implemented the recommendations and installed necessary equipment and made on site modifications which resulted in more efficient and reliable operation of the electrical system of the camp. 
The study and the follow-up installation were performed in 1999-2000.

Least-Cost Expansion Planning Study

Client: Harza Engineering Company, L.P.; Financed by the World Bank.  1999-2000
The main study objectives were to define the possible development of electricity demand in Macedonia, and to identify the associated least cost electric power expansion plans for the period 2000-2020.
Three scenarios of future energy and electricity demand were developed for the period (2000-2020) using the MAED model.  Existing thermal and hydro power plants were assessed, along with new generation options (gas-fired, nuclear, and renewables).  The least cost capacity expansion plan was developed in association with Argonne National Laboratory, using the VALORAGUA and WASP models.

Brewery Skopje – New Plants for Coca-Cola Products and Heineken Brewery

Client: Brewery Skopje.  2002-2003
Timel was selected to conduct a feasibility study and develop preliminary designs for the electric system of the new plants of Coca Cola products and Heineken brewery.  Timel worked closely with the investor’s technical personnel throughout all phases of the project development. The project included multi-task equipment sets, such as: telecommunication connections, PLC relay protection, automatic switch/control, distant supervision, design of power supply capacity in a most optimal solution, fire protection system, switchgear selection, design of air conditioning units and roof shielding.

Upon completion of the design phase, Timel has built the Ring Main Unit substation (modular system), and construct shielding at all levels in the plants.

Transmission Line Design

TimelProject provides a wide range of transmission line design services from the computer-aided design of new and upgraded transmission facilities, through the development of drawings and purchase specifications, materials engineering and procurement, construction and project management.
Our extensive experience and knowledge in the utility industry gives us a unique understanding of transmission issues. TimelProject transmission engineers have designed or built more than 1200 kilometers of transmission lines and associated foundations, including complex designs adapted to some of rugged terrain in Macedonia.
We use a computer software for the design and analysis of transmission lines from 10-kV concrete poles to 400-kV lattice steel towers.

Our scope of services includes:

  • Transmission line upgrades and modifications, reconductoring design
  • Detailed job packages—line design, construction staging, conductor sag and tension charts to IEC  standards

Recent Selected Experience

Technical and economic Analysis for rehabilitation and transmission capacity upgrade at 110 kV T-line (No. 106/1) from Vrutok to Oslomej

Client:  ESM; 1998
Timel was contracted by ESM to investigate possibilities for rehabilitation and transmission capacity upgrade at 110 kV transmission line from Vrutok to Oslomej.  Our expert's team analyzed the towers structure at additional load of enlarged conductors using modeling software.  Several scenarios were developed by utilizing various tower structures and conductors and provided economic analysis.  Based on the outcomes, a final recommendation was provided to the client.

Trans-Balkan Power Line Project Study

Client: Harza Engineering Company, U.S.A. & The U.S. Trade and Development Agency.   2001-2002
The Trans-Balkan Power Line Project involves the design and construction of two electric power lines connecting the existing electric power transmission systems of Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria and associated substations.  The first line, a 190-km long 440-kV line, will connect Radomir in Bulgaria and Dubrovo in Macedonia.  The second line, 1 104-km long 220-kV line, will connect Vrutok in Macedonia and Burrel in Albania. Various technical, economic and environmental studies have been performed to date and the main study objectives of the current study are to:

  • Perform a technical due diligence on the work that has been completed to date by the three utilities on the proposed interconnection links,
  • Perform an environmental due diligence on the work that has been completed to date by the three utilities on the proposed problems or constraints,
  • Assess the legal and institutional framework to identify any legal, regulatory, political or other institutional problems or constraints,
  • Analyze the market potential for power transactions along the proposed transmission lines so that potential revenues can be estimated, and
  • Evaluate the economic and financial viability of the project.

Energy balance data and forecast of these energy balances to year 2005 and 2010 (for all three countries:  Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania)

110 kV T-Line Kicevo - Sopotnica

Client: Electric Power Company of Macedonia (ESM).   2001-2002
Timel contracted with ESM to perform a detail design for reconstruction of the old 110 kV line in longitude of 35 km.  The line was designed on steel-lattice towers with fiber-optic grounding. After dismantling the old line, Timel carried on the reconstruction of the line.  The project was completed on schedule and has been put in operation.

35 kV T-Line Ohrid 1 - Gradiste

Client: Power Distribution Company of Ohrid.   2004
Timel contracted with Power Distribution Company of Ohrid to perform preliminary design followed by detailed design of 35 kV line in longitude of 15 km. The primary goal of this design was to improve the energy conditions and resolve the supply issues in the Ohrid area. First 1.5 km is cable line built within the urban area of Ohrid.  Based on Timel’s detailed design, this line was constructed by Ohrid Distribution Company in 2005.
